Étang-la-Ville is called “Étang-la-Ville” in English. The name comes from the fact that there used to be a pond in the town, which was used to irrigate the farmers’ crops.
Built in the 21st century, the Château de l’Étang-la-Ville belonged to several noble families, including the Fonton family, which gave its name to the town’s park. It was occupied by the Germans during World War II and was left in ruins. It was restored in 1967 and has now become the town hall.
